TOP NEWS: Prime Minister Hun Manet Calls on ASEAN to De-Escalate Border Clashes in Banteay Meanchey
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Prime Minister Hun Manet had a telephone conversation Thursday evening with Malaysian Prime Minister and ASEAN rotating chair Anwar Ibrahim to discuss escalating border tensions affecting Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey Province.
According to official sources, recent days have seen intermittent clashes between Thai armed forces and Cambodian civilians in Prey Chan Village, O Bei Chon Commune, O Chrov District. The violence has resulted in multiple injuries among civilians and heightened concerns over border stability. Cambodia has condemned the incursion and called for restraint from all parties.
The two leaders reviewed developments following a series of recent incidents that have heightened tensions along the border, including reports of Thai military movements near the disputed area and Cambodia’s calls for peaceful resolution. This follows diplomatic efforts at the recent meeting of the General Boundary Commission (GBC) on September 10, which emphasized resolving the border dispute through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) processes outlined in the 2000 Agreement on the Delimitation of Cambodia and Thailand’s border.
Hun Manet expressed his concern over the situation and urged ASEAN members, particularly Malaysia as the current chair, to intervene diplomatically. He requested that Anwar Ibrahim use his influence to promote de-escalation, maintain the status quo, and avoid further actions that could widen the conflict.
He stressed the importance of adhering to the agreed-upon procedures and called on both sides to exercise restraint while awaiting a peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels. Cambodia has reiterated its commitment to resolving the border issue peacefully, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and adherence to existing agreements.
